Which mitre box should you choose?
To determine which mitre box is best for your needs, first consider your specific application and the type of saw you intend to use. If you require standard 90° square cuts and 45° mitres with a hand saw, a combined mitre box featuring fixed stops for both angles is a practical choice. For projects requiring custom angles, an adjustable mitre box or a mitre saw is the appropriate choice.
Guides for Western saws
Mitre boxes for Japanese saws
Guides designed specifically for Japanese saws are generally intended for use with a Kataba—a saw without a reinforced spine. The back of a Dozuki saw and its relatively narrow blade limit its utility in a mitre box. Similarly, a Ryoba, which has teeth on both sides of the blade, is only suitable for use with certain guides.

For optimal results, we recommend a complete mitre box set. These sets include a Japanese saw with a blade specifically matched to the guide, as well as practical accessories such as a protractor and a »dummy blade« for precise positioning along the scribe mark and for setting angles.
The precision mitre box set from Z-Saw can be used for both mitre and 90° cuts and includes two blades (175 mm and 265 mm). The guide in the larger set can be tilted by +/- 45° across two axes, making it suitable for compound mitre cuts. Both sets are supplied with a longitudinal fence, allowing for long, deep cuts in panels or for edging boards. The tilted fence in the larger set also facilitates the cutting of housing joints and sliding dovetails.
