Stationary belt grinders
EXPERT KNOWLEDGE STATIONARY BELT GRINDERS
The term belt sander covers both classic electric hand belt grinders and stationary belt sanders for woodworking or metalworking. The term Stationary belt grinders outlines smaller semi-stationary models with a sanding belt width of approx. 50 mm. These can be designed as pure belt sanders or, as in many cases, as combination sanders with an additional lateral Grinding wheels sanding discs (coarse sanding disc for pre-sanding). The advantage of these machines compared to double sanders is that the sanding belts can be changed relatively quickly. This means that the sander can easily use different grits of sanding belts one after the other.
How are Stationary belt grinders constructed?
Housing
The housing of a floor-standing belt sander is usually made of robust metal or high-quality plastic and serves several purposes:
- Stability: Rubber feet and a high overall machine weight ensure stability and reduce vibrations during the sanding process.
- Protection: It protects the internal components from dust and dirt that can occur during the sanding process and at the same time protects the user and the working environment from chips and sparks.
Engine
- Performance: Typical engine power is between 350 watts and 500 watts. A powerful motor enables faster sanding and the processing of harder materials.
- Belt speed: The belt speed is between 7 and 9 m/s.
Belt rollers
- Drive roller: This roller is driven by the motor and ensures that the sanding belts are driven evenly.
- Track roller: This roller supports the Sanding belts and allows the belt tension to be regulated.
Sanding table
The workpiece is held on the sanding table/sanding fence or work rest during sanding. It can be made of solid steel or sheet metal and should be stable. Some floor-standing belt sanders have a tilting sanding table to allow for different grinding angles.
Protective devices
- Protective bonnet: The closed cover (protective bonnet) encloses the sanding belts and protects the user from sparks and dust.
- Eye protection: Some models are equipped with additional protective devices, e.g. a spark protection glass, to minimise the risk of injury.
- Emergency stop switch: A centrally located emergency stop or on/off switch allows the user to switch off the machine quickly in the event of a hazardous situation.
Use of stationary belt sanders
Stationary belt grinders have a wide range of applications:
- Sharpening tools: these machines are ideal for sharpening tools such as turning irons, knives, axes and other cutting tools. Sharpening is achieved by precisely guiding the tool against the sanding belts, resulting in an even and sharp finish.
- Woodworking: Stand belt sanders are used in woodworking to smooth wooden surfaces, shape edges and remove unwanted material residues. They are particularly effective when sanding curved contours freehand. Caution: Stationary belt grinders should only be used for wood or only for metal. The flying sparks during metalworking could ignite wood chips in the extraction area behind the sanding belts!
- Metalworking: In metalworking, floor-standing belt sanders are used for deburring and sanding metal parts. They can be used for both coarse and fine sanding work thanks to quick belt changes, making them highly flexible.
Advantages of the free-running belt
A decisive advantage of stationary belt sanders is the sectional free-running sanding belt, which enables a convex bevel on blades. This special grinding technique gives the blade a convex shape, which increases the cutting ability and durability of the tool.
