Polishing wheels
EXPERT KNOWLEDGE POLISHING DISCS
Polishing discs are often made of soft material to ensure gentle processing of the surface. Hardness Polishing discs, e.g. made of Felt, are used when the contour of the surface to be polished should not be changed, e.g. for tool cutting edges.
The discs can have different shapes, such as Flat or conical versions, depending on the requirements of the use. Drills, pillar drills, bench polishers (grinders with reversed direction of rotation) or angle grinders are frequently used machines to use polishing wheels.
How polishing discs work
The way a polishing wheel works is simple and effective. When the polishing disc is set in rotation, friction is created under pressure on the material to be polished.
The roughness of the polishing disc material allows surfaces to be smoothed and scratches to be removed. If polishing pastes are used, the disc serves as a carrier material for the polishing substances in the paste.
When polishing, it is important to apply even pressure and to move the disc gently and evenly over the surface in order to achieve optimum results.
Types of polishing wheels
Brushes
Brushes with thicker, harder bristles have an abrasive effect and reliably remove dirt. They are ideal for cleaning, derusting and brushing out wood fibres. Finer, softer bristles, on the other hand, are very flexible and adapt easily to the shape of the workpiece, which is particularly important when polishing profiled workpieces.
Buffing wheels
Soft cloth discs, so-called buffing wheels, adapt well to the workpiece. With harder fabric discs, the individual layers of fabric are sewn together, which gives them additional stability and strength. The tighter the seams are sewn, the more stable the disc becomes. However, the flexibility can be increased again by separating individual seams.
Felt polishing wheels
Solid discs made from materials such as Felt (wool felt) or plastic are particularly suitable for precise polishing and sanding work.
Flannel polishing wheels
These discs are used for high-gloss polishing.
Polishing wheels for angle grinders
Polishing wheels for angle grinders have an M14 holder, which enables them to be attached to angle grinders. Angle grinders are usually used to polish chrome parts in car restoration or knife blades. With its Brightex product, Eisenblätter has created an excellent solution for polishing knife blades.
Polishing pastes
To achieve the best results, the use of Polishing pastes is essential. These special pastes are available in different formulations and help to remove scratches and unevenness in the surface while creating a high gloss. The choice of polishing pastes depends on the Material being worked on.
