Leather strops
EXPERT KNOWLEDGE LEATHER STROPS
What is a Leather strops?
Leather strops are, in their simplest Shape, pieces of leather used for polishing and sharpening knives, razors and other blades. They can be made from both natural leather and synthetic materials.
Paddle strops / Stripper belts / Stripper block
If a Leather strop is used for rigid knife blades (pocket knives, Hunting Knives, ...), the Leather strop should either be made of strong saddler's leather (the classic term here is Leather straps) or, in the case of thinner leather, be glued to a wooden block. One advantage of Leather strops on wooden blocks is that the knife handle can run freely during honing. In addition, such paddle strops usually have a handle with which the leather can be held in position. Even if the term "push strop" is misleading, as the technique does not involve pushing, this term has become established.
Hanging strop
A Hanging strop is made from strong Leather. It can have a cotton fabric on the back, which can be polished using pastes. This type of Leather strops is used for Razors that have a flexible blade. The Leather follows the cutting edge as it is honed.
Tension belts or push belts with slats
Tension straps or Leather strops, which are glued to a wooden body with slats, follow the knife blade in a similar way to the Hanging strop. They are mainly used for honing Razors.
Why do you need Leather strops?
Leather strops can be used to remove wire edges (burrs) from knife blades after sharpening. If a paste is used in combination with Leather strops, knives can also be polished using the same process. In the case of razor blades, Leather strops can straighten the edge again before shaving.
Removal of the ridge
The burr that forms when sharpening a cutting edge on a Grinding stones consists of tiny bent metal parts on the cutting edge. A strop is used to remove this burr by placing the cutting edge Flat on the Leather and pulling it over the Leather with light pressure. The knife blade always points away from the leather. Repeat several times on both sides of the blade to remove the burr piece by piece.
- Preparation: Make sure that the blade is clean. It can be helpful to moisten the knife blade slightly to improve the polishing effect.
- Honing: Hold the blade at an Angle of about 15-20 degrees to the Leather and gently pull the knife blade across the Leather. Work in one direction and pull the blade away from the leather strap to achieve an even result. Repeat the process several times on each side of the blade.
- Check: After pulling the blade, you can test the sharpness of the blade to ensure that it has reached the desired sharpness.
Polishing stripping paste in combination with Leather strops
Using pastes together with strops is an effective way to further improve the sharpness and lustre of blades. Stripping pastes or grinding pastes are special products that contain abrasive particles and help to smooth out unevenness in the blade and achieve an even finer polish.
Advantages:
- Increased polishing effect: Polishing pastes contain fine abrasive particles that additionally work the knife blade during honing and create an even smoother edge. This results in increased sharpness and a professional finish.
- Removing micro-scratches: Tiny scratches can appear on the knife blade during sharpening. The use of Polishing pastes helps to remove these micro-scratches and smooth the blade. This also reduces the susceptibility to rust.
- Lengthier sharpness: Fine polishing with Polishing pastes makes the blade more resistant to degrees of wear. A well-polished blade stays sharp for longer as friction is reduced during use.
- Versatility: There are different types of polishing pastes developed for different Uses and Materials. You can choose specific pastes to achieve the best results.
Use:
- Preparation: Start with a clean leather strops. Apply a small quantity of Polishing pastes evenly to the surface of the Leather.
- Stripping: Use the same technique as normal stripping, dragging the blade across the Leather at an Angle of approximately 15-20 degrees. Work in one direction to achieve an even result. Polishing pastes are worked into the blade during stripping.
Important notes
- Quantity of Polishing pastes: Do not use too much polishing paste; a small quantity is often sufficient to achieve effective results. Too much paste can become sticky and impair the polishing effect.
- Quality of the paste: Make sure you choose a high-quality polishing paste that is suitable for the type of material you want to sharpen. Cheap products can be less effective and potentially damage the blade.
- Use regularly: For the best results, incorporate Polishing pastes into your sharpening routine regularly - especially if you use your blades often or want to keep them extra sharp.
- Only ever use a Leather strops with the same paste.
The combination of sharpening paste and strop is an excellent way to optimise the sharpness and polish of your blades. If you want to maintain your knives regularly, using Polishing pastes with Leather strops is a valuable addition to your sharpening routine.
