»Scary Sharpening« Set
Scarily sharp tools
The Scary Sharp Technique is a cost-effective and simple alternative to all other sharpening methods. This method gets its name Scary Sharp from the fact that it can create an incredibly (scary) sharp cutting edge. The main benefits of this technique are speed and ease. An anti-slip mat included in the set holds the float glass sheet with the cut sharpening film securely in position and you can start sharpening immediately. This system works particularly well with a jig.
3M Stikit Microfinishing Film Sheets
3M lapping and finishing films are extremely precise, self-adhesive superabrasives that ensure even, tolerance-accurate surfaces. A high-strength polyester film is coated with high-quality, micrometrically graded mineral particles that are electrostatically aligned for greater cutting efficiency. The set includes one film sheet each with grit 1, 3, 9, 15, 30, 40 and 100 microns.
Sharpening
Only a few passes on the sandpaper are required for a »scarily« sharp result. After each series of passes, the tool should be wiped down to remove dust and dirt. This process can be repeated with a finer and finer grit until the tool has reached the desired degree of sharpness. Cut each 3M film sheet into four 230 (215) x 70 mm strips, peel off the protective film and carefully stick one strip of each required grit size next to each other on the float glass sheet. Make sure that no air bubbles are trapped. Moisten the abrasive with water. When working on a micro bevel, only move the blade with a pulling motion over the abrasive, two or three passes on each strip will be sufficient here.
