You will learn the basic principles of woodworking, what the standard tools are (e.g. Japanese saw, chisel, marking gauge, square) and how to use them correctly. By making a range of wood joints you will familiarise yourself with the proper handling of these tools, which are essential for woodworking.
The theory part provides information on the structure of wood and the different properties of common wood species. You will also find out how to store wood and how to glue solid wood joints correctly. In a separate module we provide a thorough introduction to the different hand tools, their design and their application.
The practical part will focus on four basic wood joints. We will start with simple lap joints as used for corner and cross joints. We will then go on to produce two types of bridle joint. All practice tasks are explained in detail. The aim is that you can subsequently use these joints in your own projects.
For participation in the course we recommend the following tools:
Japanese saw set (Dozuki and Ryoba)
Chisel set, 6 to 26 mm
Router plane
Hammer or mallet
Marking tools: marking gauge, square, sliding bevel, ruler and pencil
The listed tools are our recommended basic equipment for the practical part. Before acquiring specific tools, you may want to familiarise yourself with the properties of the tools in the theory part.
