Lie-Nielsen planes
EXPERT KNOWLEDGE LIE-NIELSEN PLANES
Lie-Nielsen planes - traditional design reinterpreted
What makes Lie-Nielsen planes so special is the conscious decision to take inspiration from classic planes, in particular the famous Stanley Bailey and Bedrock models. These tried-and-tested designs from the past are not only reissued in the Lie-Nielsen planes, but significantly improved. The company uses materials such as A2 Steel for durable, rust-resistant blades and nodular cast iron for stable, low-vibration planer bodies and manufacturing techniques that were either unavailable or too expensive in the era of the historical models.
Lie-Nielsen planes - Planes
A central element is the iron used. These are made of A2 steel, which is characterised by particularly high wear resistance and rust resistance. Compared to traditionally used steels, A2 steel offers a longer service life, which means that the blade needs to be resharpened less frequently. Another special feature of Lie-Nielsen planes is the iron thickness, which is between 3.2 and 4.8 mm on all models. This thickness, which is above average compared to the earlier Stanley planes, significantly reduces vibrations when planing and ensures a particularly clean and even cut. In addition, the irons are hardened to 62 HRC, which makes them extremely resistant. Subsequent cryogenic treatment (cryogenic Hardness) makes the plane irons even finer-grained, which further increases their stability.
Lie-Nielsen planes - Ergonomics
The handles of the Lie-Nielsen planes are ergonomically designed and made of high-quality wood, which ensures optimum comfort and control while working.
Lie-Nielsen planes - Planes body
The body of Lie-Nielsen planes is also of the highest quality. Instead of simple cast iron, as used by Stanley and other Manufacturers in the original version, the company uses nodular cast iron. This special material is annealed without stress, which makes it extremely resistant to wear and breakage. Ductile iron also offers excellent damping, which further reduces vibrations during Planes and ensures smooth, controlled handling. This choice of material not only ensures an extremely long service life, but also comfortable working without unnecessary shocks.
Lie Nielsen planer types
The Lie-Nielsen planes range includes a wide range of planes that are suitable for both rough work and final surface finishing.
Popular models include:
Art. 703712, Lie-Nielsen planer no. 4: The standard planer or fettling plane enables fine chip removal even with difficult grain.
Art. 703773, Lie-Nielsen Boggs Spokeshaves: Elaborately crafted Spokeshaves with an extremely fine plane mouth, developed by Lie-Nielsen in collaboration with master chairmaker Brian Boggs.
Art. 703704, Lie-Nielsen Scrub planes: With slightly crowned ground iron and large jaw opening for high material removal. Solid cast iron body for heavy-duty use.
Art. 703792, Lie-Nielsen Block planes: the Lie-Nielsen single-handed Rabbet planes 60½ R with pre-cutter is ideal for rebates, parapets, reworking tenons and, thanks to the low angle of inclination of 12°, also for trimming end grain.
Conclusion: Perfect symbiosis of tradition and innovation
Lie-Nielsen planes represent the perfect combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern material technology. With their high precision, durable A2 steel irons and stable, low-vibration planer bodies, the metal planes offer unrivalled quality of work. Lie-Nielsen planes are an excellent choice for craftsmen who prioritise the highest quality and durability.
Thanks to the continuous improvement of classic planer types, they set new standards in woodworking and make precise, pleasant work possible - whether in professional use or in the demanding hobby sector.
