EXPERT KNOWLEDGE - LAGUIOLE KNIVES
How do you recognise an original Laguiole knife?
To distinguish an original Laguiole knife from a replica or a fake, you should pay attention to some specific features and details. Here are the most important points for recognising a genuine Laguiole knife:
A genuine Laguiole knife will often have a distinctive "shepherd's cross" in the blade or on the handle, symbolising its origin from the Laguiole region of France. Brand logo: Check that the knife bears the Manufacturer's official logo. Make sure that there are no blurred or inaccurate prints.
2. blade shape and finish
Blade shape: The blade of a genuine Laguiole knife is usually slightly curved and has an elegant, traditional shape. It should also have a certain quality of finish, without rough edges or unevenness.
Sharpness and lustre: The blade should be well sharpened and well polished. An unsharp or poorly polished finish may indicate an inferior imitation product.
3 Handle material and finish:
Handle materials: original Laguiole knives use high-quality materials for the handle, including fine wood, horn or luxurious materials such as mammoth ivory. Make sure that the handle is well made and firmly attached.
Workmanship: The workmanship of the handle should be precise, without gaps or uneven transitions. With inferior copies, the handle can often be unevenly or uncleanly finished.
4. spring mechanism
Spring and lock: Genuine Laguiole knives are known for their precise spring mechanism. The spring should move smoothly when opening and closing the blade, without resistance or play. Some models have a typical "centipede" mechanism, which ensures that the blade remains locked in the open position.
5. engravings and inscriptions
Engravings: A genuine Laguiole knife may have fine engravings on the blade or handle showing the Manufacturer's name or other details. Check the engravings for clarity and accuracy.
6 Manufacturer and origin
Origin: Original Laguiole knives come from the Laguiole region of France. Check that the seller or Manufacturer is demonstrably based in this region.
Certificates: Some reputable Manufacturers offer certificates or guarantees for their products. These can provide additional assurance that you are buying an original.
7 Price and source of purchase
Price: Genuine Laguiole knives are often more expensive due to the high-quality materials and precise craftsmanship. An unusually low price may indicate a counterfeit.
Seller: Buy from reputable and recognised dealers to ensure that you receive an original.
