Roorkhee chair
Roorkhee chair
Within four days, the participants of this course learnt how to build one of the most comfortable classics of the 20th century - the Roorkhee chair.
Consisting of a leather seat and backrest and only 10 wooden parts, this chair has been used by adventurers and in military command posts since its invention in 1898.
In the course, renowned craftsman, lecturer, author and blogger Chris Schwarz demonstrated the construction of a complete Roorkhee chair including all wooden, metal and leather components. The feet were either turned or worked out with the help of a drawknife, tail plane and chisel. After cutting to size, the seat and backrest leather was riveted. To ensure that the participants can enjoy their Roorkhee chairs for a long time, Chris Schwarz also showed them how to treat the leather properly.
What course participants say

The big book of chair making
A compendium on the craft of woodworking, by Drew Langsner. This fundamental work is far more than a chair manual. It describes with great expertise the selection and preparation of the necessary tools and equipment, the extraction, splitting and storage of the wood through to the manufacture of the rungs, frame parts and seats. A wide variety of rung chairs are presented as projects, including Windsor chairs, American country house models, stools with woven seats, children's chairs, benches and much more. Instructions for building a solid workbench, a carving bench, a steaming chamber and a foot-operated wood-turning lathe round off this book, which will enrich the life of any woodworker.
