DICTUM planes
EXPERT KNOWLEDGE DICTUM PLANES
DICTUM planes - quality and precision for wood processing
Inspired by the traditional Herdim planes that have been valued by violin makers for decades, these planes combine precise workmanship with state-of-the-art technology. The series comprises different types of planes, each of which is designed for a specific purpose in woodworking.

DICTUM planes - high-quality materials and workmanship
A key feature of the DICTUM planer series is the use of high-quality materials.
The planer bodies are made of robust cast steel, which is known for its stability and durability. The sole and cheeks of the Planes are finely ground and square-edged. This precision is crucial for clean planing work and a perfect finish.
The planes in the basic configuration are equipped with at least 3 mm thick blades made of SK4 Steel, which have a Hardness of 61-62 HRC. Optionally, selected Planes can also be purchased with a Japanese blue paper steel iron (63 HRC) or an HSS Cryo iron (64 HRC).

Cast steel vs. grey cast iron
Planes in the low and medium price segment are often manufactured from grey cast iron. However, this easy-to-cast material is susceptible to breakage. A breakage test on the sides of the planer body clearly shows that cast steel, in contrast, does not break, but merely deforms under extreme pressure.
For this reason, the material thicknesses of grey cast iron are significantly increased compared to cast steel and ductile cast iron, which gives the Planes more stability but also makes it unwieldy and significantly heavier.
DICTUM planes - ergonomic design for maximum comfort
The handles, which are made from local copper beech wood, are comfortable to hold and offer the necessary comfort and ergonomics. The handles have been developed in extensive functional tests to ensure optimum control.
DICTUM planes have an easy-to-adjust iron adjustment and, where possible, lateral adjustment of the iron. This function allows the user to quickly and easily adjust the Cutting depth to the required purpose, which is particularly advantageous in the fine processing of wood. Small corrections can be made in no time at all without having to interrupt work.
DICTUM planes - extensive model selection
The DICTUM planer series includes a wide range of models suitable for various uses in woodworking. These include all the classic Bench planes from the 4-plane to the 7-plane through to models such as the Length Low-angle bench planes No. 62 with hot dog.
In addition:
The Rabbet planes are ideal for all fitting work on rebates, mouldings and grooves. The planer mouth can be easily adjusted using an adjusting screw.
The Block planes are compact and are guided with one hand, making them ideal for small corrections and precise reworking of edges and joints. The planer mouth can be precisely adjusted to the respective requirement using an adjustable tongue.
The one-handed Blockbet planes are a special variant of the one-handed planes that can plane flush into corners and edges, making them perfect for working on rebates and narrow edges.
The Pocket planes are characterised by their particularly small size, which makes them easy to transport and fits perfectly in the hand.
As well as many tail plane models with different sole designs and an all-steel version for boat building.
This extensive model range enables woodworkers to select the optimum tool for their specific requirements, whether for precise finishing work, smoothing surfaces or working on complex shapes.
DICTUM planes - care and maintenance
Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity and performance of metal planes. Make sure to keep the sole clean and sharpen the blades regularly.
Another important aspect is rust protection. Metal parts should be lightly oiled after use to prevent corrosion. In this way, your tool will remain in perfect condition and can provide you with many years of loyal service.
SK4 plane irons are used as standard in DICTUM planes, as this steel offers a good compromise between service life and sharpenability. However, SK4 irons are not Rustproof and therefore require regular maintenance to counteract corrosion.
