Ebony is harvested from a small group of tree species found within the larger genus Diospyros. The wood is dense to very dense, has primarily fine to medium pores and a uniform grain structure. The coloring of the wood can vary greatly depending on species. Only a very limited number of species have the characteristic jet black to striped heartwood. The market in ebony wood dates back to ancient times, when the wood was transported considerable distances and was an exotic rarity.

Today, all of the species which display black or striped heartwood are known as „ebony“. They are often grouped by their place of origin, as this often will privide clues as to the quality and botanical classification of the wood.
