EXPERT KNOWLEDGE EPOXY GLUE
What is epoxy glue?
Epoxy glue (epoxy adhesive), also known as epoxy adhesive or epoxy for short, consists of two components (2K): the resin and the hardness.
These components are mixed before use, triggering a chemical reaction. The process, also known as polymerisation, results in an extremely strong and durable bond. After curing, the Adhesives remains both chemically resistant and heat resistant.
Typical features of epoxy glues
- High adhesive strength: Epoxy glue adheres to a wide range of materials such as metal, wood, glass, rubber, ceramic, plastic, stone and concrete.
- Temperature resistance: It withstands high temperatures and is therefore suitable for demanding uses.
- Water and chemical resistance: The adhesive is resistant to moisture, oils and many chemicals.
- Gap-filling properties: Epoxy glue can also be used in uneven surfaces as it fills gaps and unevenness.
- Durability: Joints produced with epoxy glue are extremely durable and resistant.
Use of Epoxy glue
Epoxy glue is used in numerous areas, including:
Knife making
Epoxy glue is a sought-after material in knife making as it provides an extremely strong and durable bond between blades and handle materials. Ideal for gluing metal to wood, plastics, G10 or even exotic materials. The adhesive ensures a resilient and resistant construction. Due to its high strength and resistance to moisture and temperature fluctuations, epoxy resin is the perfect choice for handmade knives.
DIY and hobby projects
Epoxy glue is perfect for customised work and creative DIY projects. Whether for the repair or production of everyday objects and jewellery, for example, or model making - the adhesive enables precise and durable connections. Unique designs can be realised, especially in combination with wood, metal, glass or plastics.
Advantages and disadvantages of epoxy resin adhesive
Advantages:
- Strong adhesion: Ideal for demanding joints and long-lasting results.
- Versatility: Can be used on many materials, from metal to plastic.
- Heat resistance: Perfect for use at high temperatures.
- Water and chemical resistant: Particularly suitable for use outdoors or in aggressive environments.
- Gap-filling: Enables connections even on uneven or imperfectly fitting surfaces.
Disadvantages:
- Complex processing: The correct mixing ratio between resin and hardness is crucial for a good result. Products with mixing nozzles are ideal.
- Sensitivity before curing: Adhesives are susceptible to contamination or movement before curing.
- Cost: High-quality epoxy glues are often more expensive compared to other adhesives.
- Irritants: Both components can be irritating to the skin or eyes before curing, so protective measures are important.
Application tips for epoxy glue
Preparation:
Thoroughly clean the surfaces to remove any dirt, grease or oil. Ensure that the surfaces are dry and dust-free.
Mixing the components:
Observe the exact mixing ratio of resin and hardness (usually 1:1, depending on the product). Use a mixing cup and a stirring stick to mix the components evenly.
Application:
Apply the Adhesives to the surfaces using a spatula, brush or directly from the mixing nozzle bottle. Avoid air bubbles by spreading the Glues evenly.
Fixing the parts:
Fix the parts to be bonded with External chucking or weights during the curing time. Observe the curing time and temperature specified by the manufacturer.
Safety measures:
Wear gloves and safety goggles to avoid skin or eye irritation. Work in a well-ventilated area to minimise vapours.
Frequently asked questions about Epoxy glue
How long does it take for Epoxy glue to cure?
The curing time varies depending on the product and temperature. Fast-curing epoxy glues often only need 5-10 minutes, while standard products need several hours or even up to 24 hours.
Can epoxy glue be painted over or sanded?
Yes, after curing, epoxy glue can be sanded, drilled or painted over to achieve a perfect finish.
Is epoxy glue waterproof?
Yes, most epoxy glues are waterproof and are suitable for use in damp environments or even underwater.
How do I remove cured epoxy glue?
Cured epoxy glue can only be removed mechanically, e.g. by sanding, blade scrapers or with special tools.
Is epoxy glue food-safe and hygienic?
Epoxy glue is not generally food-safe or hygienic. Only specially certified epoxy resins are safe for contact with food once fully cured. Many commercially available epoxy adhesives contain chemicals that can be harmful to health. Only food-safe variants should therefore be used for knife making, especially if the glues come into direct contact with food. A smooth, sealed surface is also important to ensure hygiene and prevent the penetration of bacteria.
Are epoxy adhesive and epoxy resin identical?
Both products contain similar ingredients. However, there are differences: while epoxy resin is poured into cavities or moulds, epoxy adhesive is used purely for bonding. This results in differences in consistency, curing time and final strength. Glues are therefore not necessarily used as moulding resins and moulding resins are not necessarily used as adhesives.
