What is Obsidian?
Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic rock that is formed by the rapid solidification of lava. It belongs to the group of glasses as it has no crystalline structure. The rapid cooling prevents the formation of larger crystals and results in a glassy texture.
Characteristic features of Obsidian
Colour and transparency:
Obsidian is usually black or dark brown, but can also have other colours such as red, green or blue. Colour varies due to admixtures of minerals or gas inclusions. It is not transparent, but opaque.
Crystal clarity:
Fresh Obsidian fragments may have a shiny, glassy surface.
Sharp edges:
Due to its glassy structure, Obsidian can develop extremely sharp edges. This has made it a preferred Material for the Production of knives, arrowheads and other cutting tools in some archaeological cultures.
Volcanic origin:
Obsidian is usually formed in volcanic areas when hot lava cools and solidifies quickly. It is often found near volcanic eruptions and is a product of igneous rock formation.
Archaeological significance:
Archaeologists often use Obsidian to determine the origin of artefacts. As Obsidian has different chemical signatures depending on its geographical origin, archaeologists can draw conclusions about trade routes and cultural interactions by analysing Obsidian artefacts.
