Obsidian Knife by Tokashi Suemori

Description

Each piece is unique – crafted in the tradition of the Ainu.

Tokashi Suemori lives a quiet life on Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. There he learned the ancient art of splitting obsidian from the Ainu, the indigenous people of the region. This centuries-old technique, once used to make tools and ritual objects, demands not only great skill but also deep respect for the material and its tradition.
Obsidian – a volcanic glass – is known for its sharp edges and reflective surface. In Suemori’s hands, this material is transformed into unique objects: raw, powerful, yet with a quiet, meditative presence. Each piece is crafted without modern tools – with patience, experience, and a refined sense of form and fracture.
From time to time we are able to offer individual pieces of his work – each one absolutely unique in form.
These unique pieces embody a living cultural tradition and an artistic identity beyond passing trends – sought-after collector’s items for those with an appreciation of the authentic.
