Selecting the right tool:
There are many standard tools and specialised carving tools for different workpiece sizes, which are used for everything from coarse material removal to fine details. The first step is to find out which carving tools are suitable for your own working method, the coarse or fine material removal and the grain of the wood.
Carving gouges / Carving chisels / Sculpting gouges
Carving gouges are the basic carving tools for the Production of sculptures and reliefs. They come in widths from 2 to 60 mm. The length of the blade is usually between 120 mm and 140 mm. The blade of gouges is categorised according to the type of gouge. Stitch shape 1 denotes a straight cutting edge similar to a chisel. Gouge shape 4 already has a clear circular radius in cross-section and gouge shape 11 describes almost half an oval. Most chisels (gouges) are available in a long or short bent version for carving recesses. You can learn how to use these carving tools in one of our courses.
Carving ch isels (the compact version of sculpting chisels) are suitable for the Production of reliefs. These chisels are significantly shorter than standard carving chisels and are available in widths from 2 to 10 mm.
Linoleum and woodcut knives
These tools or knives are used for fine work, for example on masks, reliefs or for wood and linocuts. The knives are ideal for precise carving and fine details.
Carving knives
In addition to Carving gouges, our range also includes a selection of different knives.
Classic carving knives with straight or curved blades are used to carve small figures or details on sculptures.
Paring knives have curved blades. You can use these knives to carve indentations, for example on spoons or other small objects.
Notched carving knives have special blade shapes. Both the handle shape and the Blade shape are adapted to the notch carving technique.

Machine woodworking / Power carving
In addition to freehand woodworking, it can be worthwhile using power tools for sculpting. Straight when producing larger sculptures, the right tools can make your work much easier. In addition to wooden sculptures, you can also produce entire totem poles or turn objects using the appropriate tools.

Material
Lime wood is a classic material in wood carving and is ideal for beginners. We stock an extensive range of lime wood, from carving blanks and boards for relief carving to scantlings for figurative carving. For advanced carvers who practise figurative carving, other types of wood in our range, such as various fruit woods, are also suitable. We offer softcut boards from ESSDEE for our linocut carving tools.
