Made of tightly woven 8 oz Bedford cord – a durable cotton fabric with British roots – it is characterised by its distinctive ribbed texture and high resistance to wind and wear. The fabric takes its name from the English town of Bedford, where it was first produced industrially in the 19th century. It quickly established itself in workwear and uniforms: whether for railwaymen, miners or as part of British military uniforms, Bedford cord was regarded as virtually indestructible thanks to its exceptional abrasion resistance, tear strength and windproof qualities.
Like many traditional work fabrics, Bedford cord develops a distinctive patina over time. With wear and washing, the fabric softens without losing stability and acquires a lively surface texture with subtle colour variations along the ribs.
