Hultafors axes
EXPERT KNOWLEDGE HULTAFORS AXES
How do I find the right Hultafors axe?
The range is versatile, from hunting axes to throwing axes. At Hults Bruk, tools are produced that are precisely customised to their intended use. The axe head, cutting edge shape and the Length, swing and Weight of the handle are optimised for each other. This results in tools for felling and splitting, hunting, camping and sport. The purpose for which you are looking for an axe is therefore decisive. There is no such thing as a universal axe that can do everything. The Qvarfot felling axe is suitable for felling trees and a forest axe such as the lighter Åby forest axe for forestry work. If you want to split thick logs, a solid Hult splitting axe (1.5 kg head weight) is a good choice. If you are looking for an axe with a low overall weight for trekking and outdoor activities, the versatile Hultån trekking axe, the robust Dvardala Hunting and Outdoor axe or the handy Ågelsjön mini axe (with a Total length of only 235 mm) are your options for forest and terrain. And craftsmen have long appreciated the carpenter's axe and the quality of the Stålberg carpenter's axe. In the DICTUM shops you can try out and compare all Hultafors axes before you buy.
How do I sharpen and maintain a Bruks axe?
You can sharpen the cutting edge with a grinder. However, this quickly generates a lot of heat and there is a risk that the cutting edge will turn blue and lose hardness. We recommend sharpening by hand with a combination stone or a Diamond sharpeners. This also works on the go! To do this, place the head on a stable base (e.g. a chopping block) and guide the abrasive across the cutting edge at the right Angle. If you can feel a continuous burr on the opposite side, turn the tool over and repeat the process. Grind with a coarse grit first and then remove the cutting edge with a fine grit. A few drops of water make the sharpening process easier. Then dry everything well and apply a little oil to the surface to protect against rust. Got to tools for sharpening can be found under "Sharpening".
With the right care, you can use your Hultafors axe for a long time and pass it on to future generations. Only use an axe for the purpose for which it was made! A normal axe is not a hammer. Do not strike the so-called "neck" (back of the head) with other tools to split wood. This can cause metal splinters to fly around and create a burr that can injure you. Only use a suitable splitting hammer to drive splitting wedges and use wedges made of high-strength aluminium.
To avoid chipping and blunting during transport, always fit the supplied Case onto the blade. The blade and leather sheath should be dry to prevent rust. Always keep the tool dry, do not place it on damp floors and, if possible, store it well protected from moisture. However, avoid particularly dry rooms, such as a boiler room, as the hickory handle could dry out and come loose. Before each use, check that the handle is firmly seated in the tool head. If necessary, tighten the wedges or replace the defective handle. We also stock suitable replacement handles. Alternatively, we can also offer you our handle replacement service.
Why are axes from Hultafors hand-forged?
The axe heads are made from high-quality Swedish steel. Each axe head is brought into its final shape with many blows under the spring hammer. This costly process gives the steel a higher density and strength. Compared to axes that are forged with a few blows, Hults axes have a significantly higher durability and service life. The subsequent hardening process creates a defined hardening zone within which the blade can be resharpened without loss of hardness. By the way: Hultafors manufactures two axe lines: the simple standard variant (SV) with a sandblasted and lacquered head, and the hand-forged premium line with an elegant black-fired surface (forged skin). The high-quality series is always supplied with a robust leather case. At DICTUM, you only get premium quality!
What is special about Swedish steel?
Iron ore from Sweden is considered to be the highest quality in Europe. The ore deposits have delivered consistent quality for centuries, which is why the steel quality has also remained constant. Sweden is one of the world's leading steel producers.
