EXPERT KNOWLEDGE ABRASIVE CLOTHS / ABRASIVE PAPER SANDPAPER
Abrasive paper sandpaper or Abrasive cloths?
Abrasives differ primarily in their backing material: Abrasive paper sandpaper is made of firm paper, while Abrasive cloths are made of more flexible fabric.
- Abrasive paper sandpaper: Ideal for flat surfaces and sanding close to edges, e.g. in drawers or carcasses.
- Abrasive cloths: Perfect for curved and rounded surfaces as well as wet sanding thanks to its water resistance.
Closed and open scattering
The scattering of the abrasive grains influences the result:
- Closed grit: Provides a finer sanding pattern, but clogs more quickly. Suitable for hard woods and lacquers.
- Open grit: Provides more space for dust and is ideal for soft woods or resinous surfaces.
Which Grit for which task?
The Grit of the Abrasive paper sandpaper determines the stock removal and the finishing work:
- 40-60 grit: Rough work such as mould sanding and removing varnish.
- 80-120 grit: Pre-sanding and removing machine marks.
- 150-220 grit: Fine sanding and edge breaking before varnishing.
- 220-400 grit: Final sanding for lacquer or Palette knives.
Tip: Do not skip any grit levels in order to achieve an even sanding pattern without scratches.
Shapes and versions of Abrasive paper sandpaper
Abrasive paper sandpaper is available in different shapes to enable precise customisation to the tool and application area:
- Sheets: these rectangular Abrasive paper sandpapers are the classic and are suitable for hand sanding or use with sanding blocks. Typical dimensions are 230 x 280 mm.
- Rolls: Here, the Abrasive paper sandpaper is supplied in rolls of approx. 25 linear metres in length. Use can tear off or cut off the required section directly, making this shape particularly suitable for longer or continuous projects.
- Discs: Round Grinding wheels sanding discs used specifically for Random orbital sanders or disc sanders. They often have a Velcro fastening, which enables them to be fitted quickly.
- Belts: Endless Sanding belts made from Abrasive paper sandpaper that are used in belt sanders. This shape is ideal for large surfaces or long workpieces.
- Abrasive sponges: This variant combines Abrasive paper sandpaper with a flexible foam backing. It adapts well to irregular surfaces and is ideal for fine, manual work.
This variety of shapes makes it possible to find the right abrasive for every challenge.
What does the "P" on the Abrasive paper sandpaper mean?
The "P" stands for the grit of the Abrasive paper sandpaper, e.g. P120, and indicates the fineness of the abrasive grains. It is an internationally standardised specification (Fepa P) that helps to select the correct grit for specific tasks.
What is the difference between high-quality Abrasive paper sandpaper, e.g. Klingspor, and sandpaper from the DIY store?
When using abrasive paper sandpaper, it is important to achieve the best removal rate and service life. Abrasive paper sandpaper of high quality (e.g. Klingspor) fulfils these requirements by using high-quality abrasives. Matériau du manche, the quality of the bond is an important factor. Anyone who has worked with Abrasives from the DIY store and used high-quality Abrasive paper sandpaper for comparison will have noticed the difference.
Irrespective of the quality, it is also crucial that the Abrasive paper sandpaper is suitable for the material to be sanded (grit density). Many manufacturers of inexpensive abrasive paper sandpaper generally only offer one version. For metalworking, a dense coating is required, which brings with it a large quantity of grain points for removal. Semi-open grits with larger chip spaces are crucial for working on paints, non-ferrous metals or wood.
Where does the term sandpaper come from?
Abrasive paper sandpaper and emery paper are often used interchangeably. The term Abrasive paper sandpaper comes from the fact that the forerunners of sandpaper were produced from emery (sand).
At DICTUM you will find Abrasive paper sandpaper in the dimensions 115 x 280 mm as well as 115 mm x 25 m rolls.
