Sandpaper for metal
EXPERTENWISSEN ABZIEHLEDER
Why use special sandpaper for metal?
Metal is a resistant material that places higher demands on abrasives than wood or plastic. It is therefore important to use high-quality sandpaper first and foremost. The main difference between sandpaper for wood and sandpaper for metal is the density of the coating. An open coating with plenty of gaps is good for working on wood, while metal can be worked on more effectively with a dense coating. Wet sandpaper is often used in metalworking, as the water binds the sanding dust during processing.
The grit size, the bonding of the abrasive particles and the backing material of the sandpaper must be optimised to ensure efficiency and durability.
The right grit for metalwork
The choice of grit depends on the respective work step: Coarse sanding is often used to remove rust or old coatings, for which a low grit such as 60-80 is used. In the smoothing phase, medium grits such as 100-180 are used to level the surface and remove scratches and sanding marks from previous work steps. Fine grits from 240 are used for finishing or polishing to achieve a smooth, reflective metal surface.
-
Grit 60-80: Ideal for coarse sanding work, such as removing rust or removing old coatings.
-
Grit 100-180: Perfect for smoothing surfaces and removing scratches.
-
Grit 240 and finer: Used for finishing and polishing
