Quick guide: Planer drawer with mitre insert and precision mitre box

With these two planer bars, you can trim the edges of workpieces either at an exact right angle or at an angle of 45°. You can also use them to precisely adjust the length of tenons, mitre joints on edge bands and joints on mouldings.

Basic structure

The construction of both shutters is similar. The plywood base panel is doubled up with a narrower, slightly thinner plywood panel to create a rebate. After doubling up, the base panel is sized to the final dimensions on the circular table saw and the rebate is recut. All crossbars, stops and guide rails are also prepared on the stationary circular saw.

Differences

With the planer with mitre insert, the planer (we recommend a flat angle planer no. 62) is tilted sideways by a full 90°. It rests with one side of the planer box in the rebate of the base plate. Using the planer with mitre insert, you can cut the edges of the workpieces at an exact right angle. With the mitre insert fitted, you can cut the surfaces of mitres exactly at right angles. We also offer this planer as a fully assembled DICTUM mitre box with mitre function (no. 708991).

In the precision mitre box, the flat angle plane is guided at an angle of 45°. The sole of the plane rests against the upper guide rail and the 45° groove at the bottom. The planer is also supported laterally by the lower guide rail. The precision mitre box is suitable for chamfering edges and mitring shorter mitres.

Work sequence

We have documented the construction of each of the two hoel shops in detail in a video tutorial with all the work steps. Here is an overview of the most important steps:

  • Cutting the plywood panels to size
  • Doubling up the base plate
  • Formatting the base plate
  • Folding/grooving
  • Cutting the stops to size
  • Cutting the guide rails to size
  • Fitting the planer shutter

The size of both planer drawers is matched to a flat angle planer no. 62.
