Himitsu Bako boxes are certainly among the most intriguing hand-crafted wooden objects made in Japan. At first glance, they appear to be nothing more than simple boxes with intricately inlaid surfaces. Try to open them and you will quickly discover that their intricacy is more than just cosmetic. The panels must be manipulated in a pre-set series of steps to release the locking mechanisms hidden by the mosaic and allow the lid to slide open. The production of these highly precise mechanisms is a challenge which requires decades of experience - the youngest master Himitsu makers are over 60 years old. Made of solid cedar inlaid with different types of natural wood. Solution provided.
