Inside callipers
EXPERT KNOWLEDGE - INSIDE CALLIPERS
Inside callipers are used by wood turners to scan, check and transfer internal dimensions and distances. However, feelers can also be useful for other woodworking tasks, e.g. to check a rebate dimension or to determine the inside diameter of a Centre bore.
You should pay attention to this when buying an Inside callipers:
- Processing: To ensure that the probe does not damage the surface of the workpiece when measuring or checking, all edges, especially those on the measuring tips, must be deburred and slightly rounded. The tips should not be too wide so that details can also be measured.
- Fixing: As a normal Inside callipers does not have a scale, measurement results can only be compared, e.g. by placing them against a ruler or a pattern. The scanned distance must remain fixed while moving from the workpiece to the pattern and vice versa. Simple, riveted joints can wear out over time and can then be easily adjusted unnoticed. High-quality Inside callipers have a clamping screw or spring clamp to hold the setting securely in place.
- Leg length and centre distance: The leg length we specify corresponds to the actual usable depth of the button. If an opening distance is specified, this is the maximum centre distance.
What are the advantages of a digital Inside callipers?
Analogue Inside callipers usually do not have a scale and are used to compare or transfer distances. They can therefore only be used sensibly if a corresponding reference (pattern, true-to-scale drawing, ruler, etc.) is available. A digital caliper, on the other hand, provides exact values in mm and often also in inches. You can therefore also work "according to drawing" and write down the values determined so that you can use them later.
