Scorp gouges
EXPERT KNOWLEDGE SCORP GOUGES
Scorp gouges should preferably be used for fine finishing, as intensive use can put excessive strain on the wrist. The special knife is often not easy to control for beginners. Nevertheless, it is the only possible tool for certain uses. Drilling out the recesses beforehand can make the work considerably easier and protect the blades.
Differences to other carving tools
The advantage of these tools is that the cutting edge works outwards from the recess to be worked on. This can lead to a better surface finish compared to working with a hollowing gouge (carving gouge, sculpting gouge). Peeling knives or carving knives are difficult to guide in narrow recesses. Scorp gouges are ideally suited for this purpose.
What are Scorp gouges used for?
Scorp gouges are mainly used for scraping work in narrow recesses. Scorp gouges are ideal for scraping spoons, shawls and other wooden objects that require precise and fine work. Scraping knives, e.g. from DICTUM or Mora, can also be used especially for spoons.
Blade scrapers are used for tight joints. See picture.
In chair making
A large Scorp gouges corresponds to a drawknife with a strongly upward curved blade. These tools are suitable for working the seat surface of Windsor chairs. After the rough removal of Material from the seat surface, the Scorp gouges are used for finishing. Such an iron is usually equipped with a second handle for more precise guidance. These tools are known as two-handed Scorp gouges.
Sharpening the blade
Most Scorp gouges have a flat inside and a Bevel on the outside.
The sharpness of the blade is crucial for the optimal function of a Scorp gouges. Make sure to clean the blade after each use and store it in a dry place to prevent rust from forming.
