CBN grinding wheels
EXPERTENWISSEN ABZIEHLEDER
Stoßriemen / Streichriemen / Abziehriemen / Abziehblock
CBN is the abbreviation for cubic boron nitride. This synthetic material is one of the hardest materials after diamond. It is often used in the metalworking industry - especially for Grinding wheels sanding discs and cutting tools.
CBN has several advantages over traditional grinding materials:
- Heat resistance: CBN coatings remain stable even at high temperatures (which can occur on fast-running Bench grinders, for example).
- Longevity: CBN grinding wheels have a long service life when used correctly (without pressure).
- Cool grinding: Hardly any heat is generated when grinding with CBN-coated tools. This means that even sensitive steels that tend to anneal can be ground without any problems.
- Low flying sparks: The flying sparks with CBN grinding wheels are significantly lower than with silicon carbide or aluminium oxide wheels.
Hängeriemen
The use of CBN grinding wheels on double grinding machines avoids the problem of decreasing Wheel diameter and thus changing cutting edge geometries. CBN grinding wheels also save time (no dressing required) and no large amounts of heat are generated at high Speed, which reduces the risk of annealing.
CBN grinding wheels are a first-class solution for precise grinding applications. Grinding wheels sanding discs with a small diameter of 150 mm increase the risk of hollow grinding, which can weaken the cutting bevel and change the geometry of the bevel if the diameter of the grinding wheel decreases by an additional 10 mm. When using conventional corundum discs, regular dressing of the Sharpening stones is necessary, which inevitably leads to a reduction in Diameter and a loss of sharpness over time. CBN grinding wheels do not need to be dressed and therefore guarantee a consistent Diameter, reproducible cutting edge geometries and high quality sharpening results.

CBN grinding wheels offer numerous advantages over diamond-coated variants, making them an excellent choice for various grinding applications. With the ability to reach high speeds of 1700 to 3000 rpm, CBN discs enable efficient and powerful processing. They are also free from flying sparks, which not only increases safety during the grinding process, but also prevents the tool from overheating, thereby extending its service life.
The superior stock removal rate of these grinding wheels ensures a flawless finish, while the exceptional Hardness of the CBN grinding wheels guarantees a remarkable tool life. These discs can be used at temperatures of up to 400 °C, with the coating only being destroyed at temperatures of 700 °C and above, making them particularly heat-resistant.
In contrast, diamond Grinding wheels sanding discs are only effective at low Speeds. They harbour the risk of flying sparks, which poses a potential fire hazard. Overheating of the tool can also cause considerable damage. A chemical reaction between the diamond grain and the alloy components of the steel can occur at temperatures as low as 170 °C, which impairs the effectiveness of the diamond coating on diamond grinding wheels.

CBN grinding wheels are known for their high Hardness and their ability to perform efficient grinding processes. However, not all steels are equally suitable for processing with these grinding wheels sanding discs.
Suitable for CBN grinding wheels:
- Low-alloy steels with high Hardness: as these steels tend to anneal and CBN enables cool grinding, CBN is an optimal abrasive.
- High-alloy steels: Steels with a high content of alloying elements such as cobalt, molybdenum and tungsten are ideal for use with CBN.
- HSS: With these steels, CBN grinding wheels deliver excellent stock removal and a good grinding pattern.
Not suitable steels for CBN grinding wheels:
- Stainless steel: While some stainless steels can be machined, machining steels with a high chromium content is not recommended, as chemical reactions may occur between the CBN and the chromium in the stainless steel.
- Soft steels: Generally, soft steel is not suitable as CBN is not designed to machine the less Hardness materials efficiently.
- Aluminium and copper alloys: These materials tend to stick to the Grinding wheels sanding discs during grinding, which reduces the effectiveness of CBN grinding wheels.
Overall, CBN grinding wheels are particularly beneficial for machining high-alloy and very Hardness materials, while CBN does not deliver the best results on softer Steel and certain alloys.
CBN grinding wheels are available in various Grits.
For technical reasons, mainly coarser Grits are available.
B91 = JIS 180
B54 = JIS 270
B46 = JIS 325
JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard / specification of all sharpening stone grits in the DICTUM webshop).
This is how CBN discs convince: Their service life is three times longer compared to aluminium oxide, making them a cost-effective and sustainable choice. They also enable safe working without flying sparks and require less coolant, which simplifies handling and increases efficiency. CBN discs are also environmentally friendly as they are recyclable and deliver results comparable to waterstones. Their constant diameter size during operation avoids geometry changes and eliminates the need for dressing. The dry grinding process improves visibility of the grinding process and eliminates the need for water containers.
Overall, CBN grinding wheels offer an efficient, safe and durable solution for grinding applications that require high precision and stock removal rates.
