The story of Pennine begins in 1850. While the rattle of looms echoed in British factories, Sarah Bamkin employed miners' wives in the city of Nottingham to knit socks, which were then sold at the city's market. Within a few years, she earned enough to buy her own hand-powered machines and produce socks according to her ideas and vision. Under the leadership of her children Harry and Cecilia, the company flourished until the first half of the twentieth century. It survived the collapse of world trade in the 1920s and 1930s, as well as two world wars, during which it supplied the British armed forces with specially designed socks. Today, Pennine is still an independent family business that has been producing socks in the traditional way for more than 170 years. Pennine is one of the most renowned manufacturers of high-quality hunting socks in the world.
