The term »sterling silver«, also known as 925 silver, is originally derived from the currency of the United Kingdom, the pound sterling. It is the most commonly used alloy for cufflinks today. It consists of pure silver (92.5 %) and usually copper (7.5 %), which gives it a slightly reddish shimmer when exposed to a certain light level. This alloy is of the highest quality because pure silver jewellery absorbs much more oxygen during the melting process, making it more fragile and tarnish more quickly. The copper content prevents this problem and hardens the sterling silver.
