Worktop oil
EXPERT KNOWLEDGE: WORKTOP OILS
Choosing the right oil
The right oil depends on what you need from it. Linseed oil and walnut oil penetrate deeply and offer reliable protection against moisture and dirt — both are natural, environmentally sound options well suited to kitchen worktops. Danish oil and hardwax oil provide a more robust finish and are the better choice for surfaces that take heavy daily use.
Oils suitable for worktops
1. Linseed Oil
A plant-based oil widely used for treating wood surfaces. It penetrates deeply, offers excellent moisture protection, and brings out the natural grain with a warm, matte finish. Linseed oil is non-toxic and environmentally friendly, making it a sound choice for kitchen worktops. Note that drying times are longer than most other oils — our cold-bleached variant reduces this considerably.
2. Walnut Oil
Another plant-based oil well suited to wood care. It absorbs quickly and builds a resilient surface ideal for worktop treatment. The effect is similar to linseed oil, giving a natural sheen without dramatically altering the appearance of the wood. Walnut oil does enhance the colour slightly — it is not a colourless finish — but the effect is subtle. For best results, we recommend walnut oil as a first coat, followed by one or more coats of DICTUM Walnut Wax once dry.
3. Danish Oil
A blend of plant-based oils and resins that produces a particularly durable surface finish. It offers excellent moisture resistance, protects against wear and dirt, and applies easily in thin, successive coats.
4. Hardwax Oil
An excellent choice for wooden worktops, combining the deep-penetrating benefits of plant oils with the protective properties of wax. The result is a highly durable, low-maintenance finish well suited to heavily used kitchen surfaces.
5. Oil-Wax Blends
Oil-wax blends combine the nourishing qualities of natural oils with the protective performance of wax, making them one of the most effective options for worktop treatment. The finish is tough, easy to maintain, and long-lasting.
We stock a range of tried-and-tested oils and waxes for mixing your own blend. The advantage of a custom mix is full control over the ingredients — allowing you to tailor the finish precisely to the level of protection and appearance you want.
The benefits of oiled worktops
Moisture protection and longevity
Kitchen worktops are constantly exposed to water, cooking oil, and other liquids. Worktop oil forms an invisible protective barrier that prevents moisture from penetrating the wood and causing damage — keeping the surface in good condition and more resistant to staining and warping over time.
Natural appearance
Worktop oil enhances the natural grain and gives the surface a warm, organic quality. Unlike lacquers and surface sealants, which sit on top of the wood, oil penetrates deeply and preserves the authentic look and feel of the material. The result is a matte or satin finish that keeps the wood looking alive and inviting.
Easy maintenance
Oiled surfaces are less prone to visible scratching and wear than lacquered ones, and maintenance is straightforward. When the surface needs refreshing, a thin coat of oil is all that is required — no sanding back, no full refinish.
Resistance to grease and dirt
Kitchen worktops are regularly exposed to fats, oils, and other stubborn substances. Worktop oil forms a protective barrier that prevents these from soaking into the wood, keeping the surface hygienic and easy to clean — an important consideration in any kitchen.
Environmentally friendly and food-safe
Most worktop oils are made from natural, plant-based ingredients that are both environmentally sound and safe for contact with food — making them the preferred choice for kitchen surfaces where the absence of harmful chemicals matters.
How to apply worktop oil
Applying worktop oil is straightforward and requires no specialist skills. Follow these steps for the best results:
- Surface preparation: clean the worktop thoroughly to remove dust, dirt, and grease. If necessary, sand lightly to improve absorption.
- Applying the oil: use a soft brush or cloth to spread the oil evenly across the surface in thin, consistent coats.
- Allow to penetrate, then wipe back: leave the oil to soak in for 15 to 30 minutes, then wipe away any excess with a clean cloth.
- Drying and recoating: allow to dry fully — drying time varies by product. A second coat can be applied for additional protection.
Worktop oil is one of the most effective ways to care for and protect a wooden kitchen worktop. It builds a durable, water-resistant finish, brings out the natural beauty of the wood, and is easy to maintain over the long term.
If you are looking for a natural, reliable way to protect your worktop from the demands of daily kitchen use, our range of worktop oils is an excellent place to start.
