Difference between pillar drills and Drill stands
Column drill presses, also known as pillar drills, are permanently installed devices used to drill precise holes perpendicular to the surface in various materials. Due to their design, however, the possible applications are limited. In addition, these stationary machines, just like pillar drilling machines bench drills, often require considerable space in the workshop. In many cases, the high purchase costs are hardly in relation to the use. This is where the Drill stands for cordless screwdrivers or drill drivers / drills come into play - they are more compact and much more versatile, making them ideal for DIY enthusiasts.
For which situations is a Drill stands useful?
The main function of the Drill stands is vertical drilling. As a drilling machine is often already available, the drill stands save on additional acquisition costs.
Drilling at an angle to the material surface is easy with a swivelling drill stands. There is no need for complicated auxiliary constructions or devices that align the workpiece at an angle, as would be necessary with the drill stand. The drill stands are also mobile. It is appreciated by hobby carpenters and professional craftsmen alike due to its flexibility. It can be used in the workshop as well as for interior work or on the construction site, making vertical and angled Centre bores flexible and possible anywhere. This mobility also makes it possible to drill into the centre of large workpieces, for example wooden panels, where pillar drills quickly reach their limits due to limited clearance widths.
Thanks to the built-in Drill chucks with different clamping widths of up to 13 mm, various drill bits, Forstner bits or even auger bits can be clamped and guided stably. Fixed or swivelling Drill stands?
Fixed Drill stands are designed so that the guide columns can be fastened with star screws in the precisely fitting holes in the support table. This makes the Drill stands easy to store as they can be completely dismantled. Models with swivelling guide pillars can either be fixed using two robust, lockable plastic handles or using two solid metal clamping levers. In both cases, there is an easy-to-read angle scale on both sides to ensure the most accurate setting possible. The various drill stands have different adjustment ranges for angled drill stands of 30°, 45° and 60°.
Is there a depth adjustment option for Drill stands?
The various models of Drill stands offer a variety of additional functions that can make work easier and increase accuracy. For example, it is possible to use depth stops for the drilling depth. These are usually available in one or two versions and make it possible to limit centre bores exactly to the desired depth. These depth stops are an extremely useful function, especially for drilling series that have to be repeated at the same depth. Depending on the Manufacturer, the stops or depth stop rings can be moved and adjusted by hand using a brass knurled screw or a star knob screw. There is no scale on the guide pillars, and due to the large number of different tools and drill bits as well as Forstner bits and auger bits, which can be used in countless versions, a scale would not be useful. It is best to rely on setting with a metre rule and calipers. Test or sample drillings are always highly recommended! Our Drill stands do not have a retaining spring or return spring. This means that the drill must be guided by hand for the Centre bore and returned from the bore to the starting position. The second depth stop can be helpful to prevent the drill from slipping out of the guide.
Drilling round timber?
Our Drill stands, which are available in swivelling and fixed versions, are characterised by a V-shaped support surface that is specially designed for processing round workpieces such as round timber and pipes. This support ensures that the round materials are securely fixed, which is essential for a stable and precise centre bore. Depending on the design of the drill stands, round materials with diameters of up to 80 mm can be processed here, which considerably expands the range of possible applications. Whether it is solid round timber, lightweight aluminium pipes or metal pipes, the drill stands are versatile and adaptable to different materials or work situations.
Which drill bits make sense to use in a Drill stands?
For optimum work results, it is important to select the right tool for centre bores in round materials. Drills with a centre point, such as Forstner bits, auger bits or pilot drills, offer the best guidance, prevent the drill from drifting and support an accurate, precisely straight bore. This results in a precise and straight centre bore, which in many cases even requires no additional fastening. This eliminates the need for clamps or screws, especially for vertical centre bores, which speeds up and simplifies the work. In contrast, drills with a centre point and peripheral cutting edges are required for angled centre bores. These drills ensure that the centre bore is drilled at a clean angle, the drill remains exactly on track and the drill edges are clean and sharp. As additional drilling forces occur when drilling at an angle, which could push the workpiece out of position, it is strongly recommended that the Drill stands are fixed with screw clamps, lever clamps or similar. Screwing it to a piece of sacrificial wood, which in turn can be fixed well using clamps or hold-down clamps, provides additional safety and stability. Bit holders and drill bit diameters are limited by the Chucks.
Use and safety
The design of our Drill stands also takes into account safety and stability during operation. There is a rubberised, non-slip plastic layer on the underside of the support table, which not only prevents the drill stand from slipping, but also protects the substrate. This layer is particularly helpful when drilling holes with a few millimetres in diameter or in smaller material thicknesses, as it ensures stability and safety. To achieve optimum adhesion, the surface on which drilling is carried out and the rubberised surface of the drill stands should be free of dust and chips.
This minimises the risk of unintentional slipping and ensures a clean drilling result.
Special care must be taken when drilling through holes or through holes, i.e. holes that pass completely through the workpiece. Tears can easily occur on the exit side of the drill bit, damaging the Material and leaving an unclean result. To avoid this, it is advisable to clamp a piece of sacrificial wood to the exit point. This piece of wood absorbs the forces generated when the drill bit exits, preventing the workpiece from splintering or tearing. This is particularly important with delicate materials such as wood or thin-walled metal pipes, which can be easily damaged. For round timber, a suitably round milled or planed sacrificial wood is conceivable.
Our Drill stands are all of high quality. The individual components are precisely manufactured, have low manufacturing tolerances and are therefore ideal for use in hobby workshops, for assembly work on the construction site or for unpredictable changes to prefabricated components. The Drill stands are also ideal for horizontal drilling on already installed or built-in components in cabinets, for example, to support accurate, error-free work. Precise angular work can often not be guaranteed in any other way, especially in this case.
