Fingerboards violin
EXPERTENWISSEN ABZIEHLEDER
Ebony fingerboard material
The traditionally favoured material for a fingerboard with excellent resonance is ebony. It grows in the tropical regions of Africa and Asia and is a particularly dense, heavy and fine-pored hardwood. These properties make it ideal for Fingerboards for string instruments. It resists pressure and friction from the strings and fingers without wearing out quickly and, when sanded, offers a pleasant feel and precise playing feel. However, the harvesting of ebony is controversial, as the trees grow slowly and uncontrolled deforestation leads to environmental problems.
However, we guarantee that the ebony we offer comes from populations in countries of origin that are not subject to species protection regulations.
In the past, violin fingerboards were often made from less resistant native woods such as pear and coloured black. This was a cost-effective solution, but it was significantly less durable. To this day, only solid ebony is used in the master class.
Reworking fingerboards
The constant pressure of the fingers on the strings causes signs of wear over time, which appear in the form of indentations in the fingerboard. A smooth, even surface is essential to ensure clean intonation and trouble-free playing. Fingerboards are therefore regularly stripped and polished. This is a standard service in master workshops to extend the life of the instrument.

Selection criteria
The choice of the right fingerboard depends on various factors, including
- Instrument type: Fingerboards are sized specifically for violins, violas, cellos or double basses.
- Playing level: Inexpensive models are suitable for beginners, while professional musicians value the highest quality and customisation.
- Sound preference: The material quality also influences the sound colour of the instrument.
Whether for the construction of a violin, viola, cello or double bass - in our range you will find the right fingerboard or fingerboard blank made from carefully selected ebony.
