DISPLAY MODEL: Tasai Extra-Wide Chisel

Description

Display model - heavily reduced

For making and touching up large wooden joins, the Japanese temple carpenter needs extra-broad blades. Only a few forgers venture to produce these formidable tools. The Japanese master blacksmith Akio Tasai ensures that each broad blade is painstakingly made by hand. This beautiful blade is particularly suitable for finishing joinery, and for countersinking fittings. The surface of this extra-wide chisel has been worked with a scraper blade. Furthermore, the chisel boasts double-layered steel with a cutting edge of Blue Paper Steel, which was forged in a charcoal furnace. Forged ferrule and hoop, Japanese red oak handle, leather case included.

Manufacturer

Tasai

Master smith Akio Tasai has achieved legendary status among Japan’s metalworkers, particularly for his mastery of the Mokume technique. His son, Michio Tasai, continues this lineage, earning his Japanese swordsmith’s licence—the highest distinction in the craft—at the age of 38 after eight years of rigorous training under master swordsmith Takano Yukimitsu. For the cutting layers of their tools, the Tasai workshop uses Blue Paper Steel specially produced to their own specifications, prized for combining exceptional hardness with outstanding ease of sharpening.
