What to do with "flash rust"?
Removing rust stains
Light flash rust can be easily polished out with a cloth and some polishing paste (e.g. Gundel-Putz polishing and stripping paste). For more stubborn, deeper rust stains, use a rust eraser. Rust erasers are available from fine to extra coarse. Depending on the grit size, they leave heavier grinding marks on the tool, which in turn can be polished out with polishing paste.
Light rust on smaller metal parts such as plane irons or knife blades can be removed with citric acid (1 tablespoon of powder to 1 litre of water). To remove more severe rust, it is advisable to use a rust remover (liquid or paste).

Protecting tools
Tools such as metal planes and saw blades can be protected from rust relatively easily by applying a thin layer of oil. To do this, apply a few drops of Japanese camellia oil to a lint-free cloth and rub it into your tools. A very thin film of oil should form, which will not leave any marks on the workpieces later.

Permanent rust protection can be achieved by quick burnishing, for example on knife blades. This creates a kind of "noble rust" on the ferrous surface. The dark colouring is also an attractive design option.
