Violin Making (Basic Course)

Course details

Using rough parts and kit components, you will practise the typical steps involved in making a handcrafted violin:
Jointing the top plates, creating the arching profile, drilling the thickness reference holes, carving the arching using gouges, arching planes and scrapers, laying out and cutting the f-holes, bending the ribs on a bending iron, fitting the bass bar, preparing and assembling the rib garland in the outside mould, fitting the linings, shaping the blocks, gluing, partial work on the neck and scroll, setting the neck, fitting and gluing the fingerboard, the nut, purfling, bridge, tailpiece, drilling and reaming the peg holes, fitting the pegs and the soundpost, and discussing specialist questions.

Each participant is advised to bring a Stradivari-model kit made from well-seasoned tonewood, or to purchase one on site at the start of the course. This makes it possible to complete steps that cannot be practised on rough parts due to time constraints, allowing you to achieve a usable result.

Note: Participation in the course cannot replace professional training in violin making.
The violin is not only one of the most sophisticated instruments for playing music on, manufacturing a violin is also a considerable challenge. A master instrument requires a minimum of 200 hours of work. A one-week course can therefore only afford you a few basic insights into the fascinating world of violin making.
