EXPERT KNOWLEDGE PICKS & PLECTRA PLECTRUMS FOR GUITARS
Guitar picks, also known as pleks, picks or picks for short, are an essential accessory for guitarists to influence the sound and playing style of their instrument. Picks come in a variety of shapes, materials and thicknesses, all of which have a different influence on the sound and feel of the instrument.
Why use a plectrum?
A guitar pick offers guitarists the opportunity to play extremely precisely and dynamically. Using a pick can amplify the sound, increase the speed of playing and provide a clearer tone, especially for fast pieces or complex solos. It is also easy on the fingers and enables lengthy playing sessions without stressing the skin on the fingertips.
Types of picks: Shapes and materials
Shapes
- Standard shape: The classic drop shape is versatile and ideal for beginners and advanced players.
- Jazz Shape: These smaller picks are specially designed for fast and precise playing, as is usual in jazz, and are ideal for solos.
- Triangular picks: These models offer a larger contact surface and are particularly popular with bass players.
- A special shapes is the 3-strength pick, which has 3 playable sides of different thicknesses.
Materials
- Nylon: Nylon is a flexible, hard-wearing material and the only pick option available in the DICTUM range. It produces a warm sound and is suitable for different playing styles. Nylon picks from the DICTUM range provide a pleasant playing feel and a balanced sound aesthetic.
- Surface texture: Fluted or matte surfaces offer additional grip - a detail that makes all the difference during length sessions.
Choosing the right pick
The choice of plectrum depends heavily on your personal playing style, the instrument you use and your favourite style of music.
Thickness of the pick
- Thin (0.38-0.73 mm): Ideal for rhythm guitars, as they allow for soft and flexible playing.
- Medium (0.73-0.88 mm): A versatile all-rounder for both rhythm and lead playing.
- Thick (from 0.88 mm): Perfect for lead guitarists and players who prefer precise control and a fuller sound. A thicker pick produces a louder and fuller tone, while thinner picks offer a softer, more percussive sound.
The interaction between the pick and the string has a decisive influence on both the sound and the playability of an instrument.
Sound effects
1. nature of the strings:
- Thick strings: These require more force, which is easier to handle with a stiff pick and produces a more powerful tone.
- Coating: Coated strings can make the sound softer, which can be compensated for by a harder pick.
- The Angle at which the pick strikes the string affects the sound. A steep angle produces sharper tones, while a flat angle produces softer transitions.
Effects on playability
- Size and shape:Smaller picks, such as jazz models, are suitable for precise playing, while larger models offer better grip and comfort.
- Grip:Nylon picks often have a slightly textured surface that improves grip, especially when playing fast passages.
- String tension:Lightly tensioned strings are easier to play with flexible picks, while tightly tensioned strings benefit from harder picks.

- Storage: Keep picks in a dry place. Special cases or holders help to keep them organised.

- Edge finishing: Precisely ground edges improve the string response and minimise unwanted noise.
- Flexibility: The elasticity of the material determines playing comfort and dynamic range.
Interesting facts and practical tips
