The nocturnal is one of the oldest astronomical instruments and was first mentioned in the 13th century. In the Renaissance it was used for reliably telling the time at night with the help of prominent fixed stars in the northern and southern sky.
The integrated tide calculator dates back to early seafaring and was indispensable for navigation in unknown waters. To predict the tides accurately, the moon, the sun, the Earth’s rotation and other parameters are taken into account.
Today, the nocturnal is modelled on historical originals and crafted in a small metal workshop: a compact pocket-sized instrument made of solid brass, finely worked to a high standard of quality and precision. Supplied with detailed instructions for use. Weight approx. 70 g.
