Making Custom Axe Handles

Course details

Loose axe handles are not only annoying, they can also be genuinely dangerous. In this course, you will learn what matters when rehandling an axe:
  • Introduction to the different handle shapes
  • Brief overview of suitable wood species
  • Selecting the right handle shape to match the type of axe and its intended use
  • Removing the old handle
  • Laying out the chosen handle on an ash board, taking the grain direction into account
  • Cutting out the blank using a jigsaw and bandsaw
  • Fitting the blank to the axe eye
  • Shaping the grip with a drawknife, hand plane and rasp
  • Cutting the kerf for the wedge on the bandsaw and making a matching hardwood wedge
  • Rehandling
  • Finishing the surface with natural oils
