Japanese Sliding Door

Course details

In this course, you will make a Japanese sliding door element on a reduced scale (approx. 1 × 0.5 m) and learn:
  • Design principles and stylistic foundations of shoji elements
  • Making the outer wooden frame, including the bottom rail, using traditional joinery such as concealed mortise-and-tenon joints
  • Half-lap joints and grooving of the delicate muntins (kumiko lattice)
  • Truing and smoothing the door element with a hand plane
  • Applying the shoji paper using starch-based adhesive
  • Introduction to tools and materials
Shoji are sliding door elements and room dividers which are still used in traditional Japanese architecture. The philosophy of a fluid space requires sliding elements of a lightweight construction that do not protrude into the room when opened, such as standard doors. By covering them with translucent paper, the elements were also used as outside walls and windows.

Instructor

Hauke Schmidt

Master cabinet maker Hauke Schmidt lives and works in Cologne. Whenever he is not building pieces of furniture according to his own design, he teaches working with solid wood. The spectrum ranges from courses for amateurs to master classes for cabinet makers. For him, teaching and learning are two sides of the same coin, which he loves both - as well as making pieces of art from roof battens.
