Gibson Chair

Course details

The Irish Gibson chair is one of the most comfortable and simple vernacular chairs ever made. With its unusual geometry and angled sticks, this chair is both incredibly rigid and comfortable. The chair is made with simple hand tools, mostly planes, drills and spokeshaves, with a power tenon cutter used to speed the construction process. Though the chair looks like a chaise-lounge, it actually holds the sitter quite upright, cradling the shoulder blades. This form is ideal for first-time chairmakers, so beginners are encouraged to apply.

Instructor

Christopher Schwarz

Already at the age of 8, he built his first own work bench. When he was a teenager, he constructed two buildings on their farm in Hackett/Arkansas together with his father only by using hand tools. The qualified journalist has preserved his passion for hand tools until today and is happy to be able to combine his hobby and profession through his job as a distinguished woodworker and author of the magazine Popular Woodworking.
