Chip Carving

Course details

An introduction into the art of carving

In this workshop you will learn the basics about carving. By way of introduction, we will learn to sharpen the tools, the proper handling of the carving blades and mallet, hand-eye coordination, i.e. all the basics needed for sculpting. The feeling for the wood grain and the proportions will come while working with the carving blade. After practicing with limewood and other woods, you are free to carve traditional patterns or your own designs into any sort of wooden object (picture frames, nameplates, boards, etc.). You can bring your own wood pieces or wooden objects.
To carve symbols in wood is one of the most original means of human expression. Accordingly, we have a veritable iconographic treasure trove in chip carving, from writing to ornaments in furniture construction and architecture. Furthermore, chip carving opens the way to sculptural design with wood.

Instructor

Jörg Steinhauer

Whether he is building a surrealistic piece of furniture, carving a Gothic altar figure or making a commissioned work for the concept artist Jeff Koons – the qualified master cabinetmaker, master sculptor and handicrafts teacher explores the sculptural scope for design of wood material with enormous inquisitiveness and also exceeds the limit between art and handicraft. His courses are among the most popular courses offered at DICTUM!
