Master smith Yoshiro Ikeda veils his consummately perfect masterpieces of metalworking beneath an unprepossessing Japanese style, just like a Samurai. The modest name of the tool - Kuroura (black inside) - refers to the blackened hollow grinding on the back, which protects against corrosion. A hand-forged ferrule complements the sleek, practical design. It is not until one glances at the fine details, for instance the even line of the forge-welding and the precise finishing of the blade, that the over 60 years of experience as a smith become perfectly evident. Yoshiro Ikeda

A master smith in the third generation, Yoshiro Ikeda is a scion of the highly respected Kunikei family of smiths. His great-grandfather was a Samurai in Yoita, and learned the art of metalworking after leaving the service. He acquired his profound understanding of steel from his master Kosuke Iwasaki and his son Shigeyosi Iwasaki, who were among the first of Japan's smiths to publish scientific monographs on the country's forging techniques. Now he has over 60 years of experience as a smith, and divides his time between manufacturing his own pieces and teaching at the Sanjo Blacksmith Dojo.
