DICTUM jigs - which one for which task?

DICTUM offers versatile jigs for numerous grinding machines and sharpening systems. Find out which jig to use for sharpening chisels, plane blades, carving tools and woodturning gouges.

Which grinding machines can I use the jigs on?

All DICTUM jigs are compatible with numerous grinding machines and sharpening systems. They can be used for sharpening on wet grinders such as the Tormek T-8, on double-wheeled grinders such as the DICTUM® Low-speed Grinder DS 150 L or a belt grinder such as the DICTUM® Belt Grinding Device BS 50/55 and other grinding systems.

DICTUM jigs, which are mounted on guide bars, fit the standard 12 mm diameter used by most manufacturers. For example, the DICTUM® Sharpening Device for Belt Grinding Device BS 50/55 has a guide rod of the appropriate diameter and can be adjusted for different sharpening tasks where repeatable accuracy is needed.

Which jig do I need for sharpening chisels and plane blades?

The DICTUM Universal Jig 90° SU-77 is suitable for sharpening chisels and paring chisels. When clamping, the chisels are aligned at a 90° angle by means of a fence. The SU-77 is suitable for sharpening machines with guide rod diameter 12 mm as described. You can also use it to sharpen plane blades up to a width of 77 mm.

The variable DICTUM® Jig SHV-77 is also intended for plane blades. The jig can be tilted +/- 5° by means of two adjusting screws. This not only enables you to grind plane blades at precise angles, but also to sharpen rounded plane blades, such as those used in smoothing planes and scrub planes.

Which jig can I use to sharpen knives?

The DICTUM® Long Knife Jig SM-100 is ideal for sharpening knives with a blade length of 100 mm or more, for example outdoor knives and kitchen knives or chef's knives. The wide clamping jaws give the blade a secure hold. The fence is precisely set via an adjustment screw.

Which DICTUM jigs are suitable for carving tools and woodturning gouges?

The DICTUM® Short Tool Jig SW-36 is ideal for sharpening short carving tools such as gouges and V-parting tools or simple woodturning tools up to 36 mm wide, for example roughing-out gouges. A plastic cap on the pressure screw avoids scratches on the tools.

The DICTUM® Universal Tool Rest STU-110 also fits guide rods with 12 mm diameter and, with its 107 x 88 mm support surface, enables flat cutting edges on chisels, scrapers, and scraper blades to be efficiently sharpened.

Can I also sharpen scissors with DICTUM jigs?

Yes. The DICTUM® Scissors Jig SST-115 allows scissors and short plane blades up to 115 mm blade length to be sharpened. Up to a thickness of 8 mm, you can precisely adjust the pressure jaws via a fine adjustment option and resharpen the cutting-tool edges at precise angles. You can use the separate guide plate of the SST-115 for different sharpening tasks, just like the Universal Tool Rest STU-110. Make sure, however, that you do not damage the surfaces and that the guide plate is slightly narrower than the universal tool rest and thus offers a smaller contact surface.

My grinding machine does not have a guide bar. Can I retrofit it?

With a little craftsmanship, this is usually possible. With the Tormek® Bench Grinder Mounting Set BGM-100, for example, you can retrofit conventional double-wheeled grinders (e.g. DICTUM® Double-wheeled Grinder DS 150 S), low-speed grinders and other grinders with a precisely adjustable guide rod. The diameter of the guide rod corresponds to that of the DICTUM jigs.
