Forging a Wok

The course begins with an introduction to forging: handling the fire, anvil, tongs and hammers....
Wok cooking is enjoying increasing popularity in Europe. The variety and, at the same time, careful preparation of meals is the reason for this. Our pan smith has developed a wok for all modern hob types (ceramic or induction). It has a flat base (14 cm), medium weight (< 3 kg) and two handles, allowing for hot frying and regular flipping and stirring.
The course begins with an introduction to forging: handling the fire, anvil, tongs and hammers. Wok making involves working a sheet differently than with forging a pan by beating it downward bit by bit (stretching). In contrast, the rim is driven into a circular trough. This gradually creates the shape and can be modelled however you desire. Two handles are forged, rolled, fitted and riveted on. After heavy brushing, the wok is straightened out one last time. The wok is ready to go after a breaking it in with a little oil, salt and onions.
