Fine Jewel Box

You will learn: Planning and execution of a simple project The different structures and joints,...
Leftover wood is an ideal raw material for fine jewel boxes and cases. This course makes use of available materials and covers planning and production of the jewel box. Throughout this you will learn the techniques and working methods necessary to create the end product. You can choose from a huge range of possibilities for what you want to make. The structural design alone is open to a multitude of possibilities: the corners can be pronged, mitred, over rebated or be given »false« teeth and pegs. The lid can be sliding, over rebated slip-on or be traditionally hinged. The casket can be partially or completely veneered and the edges have inlays from different types of wood. Material combinations are almost limitless and you can also put some finishing touches on the casket with simple profiling.
You will learn:
  • Planning and execution of a simple project
  • The different structures and joints, their use and production
  • Inlaying small surfaces with bone glue
  • Using different tools and machines such as: block planes, rebate planes and grooving planes, various handsaws, scribing tools, routers, pull saws and much more
  • Shaping using a beading tool and scratch stick
  • Treatment of surfaces with oil and shellac
