Kyudo Bow (Yumi) with Kanjuro Shibata

In this course each student will construct a Kyudo bow with two top layers of Japanese bamboo,...
Learn the ultimate skill of bow making with Imperial Bow Maker Kanjuro Shibata XXI. »Kyudo, the way of the bow« is a Japanese archery skill. Practised since the 16th century, its special series of movements and shooting technique are second to none. As exquisite as these aspects is the bow itself, which is highly asymmetrical and must be tailored exactly to the shooter’s physiognomy in length and tension. This course is a rare opportunity to learn how to make a Kyudo bow under qualified guidance outside of Japan.
In this course each student will construct a Kyudo bow with two top layers of Japanese bamboo, two intermediate layers of Japanese hardwood, and ends (hitagi) of precious wood. Among other topics, the course covers:
  • Laying up the bow
  • Planing the layers by hand
  • Hardening the bamboo
  • Gluing and shaping using a binding technique
  • Sighting
  • Finishing
  • Attaching the leather grip (ton)
  • Application and adjustment of the string (tsuru)
The course will close with an introduction to shooting technique.
