Japanese Sliding Door

While making a Japanese sliding door element on a reduced scale of approx. 1 x 0.5 m, you will...
Shoji are sliding door elements and room dividers which are still used in traditional Japanese architecture. The philosophy of a fluid space requires sliding elements of a lightweight construction that do not protrude into the room when opened, such as standard doors . By covering them with translucent paper, the elements were also used as outside walls and windows.
While making a Japanese sliding door element on a reduced scale of approx. 1 x 0.5 m, you will learn:
  • Design and basic style of Shoji elements
  • Making the exterior wooden frame incl. base plate with traditional wood joints such as covered pins
  • Interlocking and grooving in the filigree mullions (kumiko)
  • Plastering the door element with a block plane
  • Shoji-covering
    with starch-based glue
  • Material and tool science

    Hauke Schmidt

Master cabinet maker Hauke Schmidt lives and works in Cologne. Whenever he is not building pieces of furniture according to his own design, he teaches working with solid wood.
