Build a Sawbench with Christopher Schwarz

The sawbench - the most important workshop accessory for hand sawing

In our workshop each student builds their own sawbench from machine-prepared parts, which they...
In pre-machine times, sawing furniture parts to fit together was reserved for the most skilled cabinetmaker in the workshop. It was his job to cut and trim boards and notch wood joints. Hand sawing still requires great skill, yet done properly it can save time and effort. There is no need for elaborate templates, jigs or angle setting when sawing by hand. Basically, if the line is visible it can be sawn with a hand saw.
In our workshop each student builds their own sawbench from machine-prepared parts, which they join together by hand using a variety of classic wood joints. The rails are joined to the slanted legs with through tenons and the legs are embedded into the worktop. A shelf provides more stability and storage space or can accommodate extra weight. Already when building the sawbench you will learn the correct way to use hand and back saws. In a series of special exercises you will practise three different saw cuts: rough cutting to size, standard cuts for formatting parts, and fine cuts for precise wood joints. Instructor Christopher Schwarz provides valuable tips on the correct body position, mechanics and holding the parts while sawing.
