In the ring-turning process a wooden blank is worked on a special wood lathe to produce a wooden...
Ring-turning has enabled efficient production of wooden toys since the beginning of the 19th century. Developed in the Ore Mountains along the German-Czech border, the technique allows small animals and other figures to be produced en masse to decorate Christmas pyramids or Nativity scenes.
In the ring-turning process a wooden blank is worked on a special wood lathe to produce a wooden ring, the cross-section of which forms the outline of the desired figure. These turned wooden rings are then sliced up to produce the figures. Each student will create several wooden rings with different outlines. They will learn the technique using standard turning tools, thus avoiding the need for expensive and time-consuming, custom-made special shapes.
  • If you buy a woodworking lathe for more than 2000 € from DICTUM, we'll give you a voucher worth €150 for a turning course of your choice.
