The course teaches traditional techniques for working birch bark dating right back to the early Middle Ages. We use finished blade blanks Students learn to work the sheets of birch bark by hand into a knife sheath, which they then line with leather and stiffen with beeswax. The knife handle, to be made from your choice of solid wood with a layer of birch-bark flakes, will be ergonomically shaped and made to your own design. The material has a unique feel and provides an excellent grip, even with damp hands. As well as practical tips and tricks, you will also learn some of the theory and culture of birch bark You can buy blade blanks with a stick tang from us at the start of the course or bring your own with you.

    Wladimir Stoljarov

Wladimir Stoljarov -With his fascination for birch-bark culture and interest in his roots, Wladimir, along with his wife, has devoted himself to the subject of birch bark. For almost ten years he has been broadening his knowledge and experience of working with the material in combination with solid wood. With his work he hopes to help ensure that this craft, which is steeped in tradition and still survives in parts of northern and eastern Europe, does not die out and becomes more familiar in western Europe.Wladimir Stoljarov
