Violin Making Basic Course

On blanks and parts taken from assembly kits we will practice the work steps typically needed for...
The violin is not only one of the most sophisticated instruments for playing music on, manufacturing a violin is also a considerable challenge. A master instrument requires a minimum of 200 hours of work. A one-week course can therefore only afford you a few basic insights into the fascinating world of violin making.
On blanks and parts taken from assembly kits we will practice the work steps typically needed for handcrafting a violin: Joining the plates, molding the profile, drilling the pilot holes, shaping the profile with a spoon gouge, compass plane, and scraper, marking and cutting the F holes, bending the linings on the bending iron, fitting the bass bar, preparing and joining the linings for the outline, inlaying the purfling, forming the blocks, gluing, making the neck and carving the scroll, setting the neck into the body, fitting and gluing the fingerboard, saddle, chamfering, bridge, tailpiece, drilling and reaming the peg holes, attaching the pegs and setting the soundpost. We will also discuss special issues. Each participant should preferably bring an assembly kit for a Stradivari model of seasoned tone wood or purchase one on site by the beginning of the course. This will allow you to practice and bring to a result work steps that we would otherwise not have enough time for if we started with raw parts only.
Please note: Participating in this course is not adequate to a professional apprenticeship as a violin maker.
