Acoustics and Finishing in Violin Making

Acoustics and Finishing in Violin Making
Introduction into finishing and into the raw materials and work steps necessary in making violin...
There are few issues in violin making that are discussed more often and more controversial than the acoustics of the violin body and related questions of the choice of wood, dimensions, and finishing. Based on his experience of many years, Jozef Novák will introduce you to this complex subject area and present ways to acoustically optimize the musical instrument. The course offers the rare opportunity of entering the alchemist world of varnishes, resins, and pigments in order to trace the secrets of the Old Masters.
Introduction into finishing and into the raw materials and work steps necessary in making violin varnish, spirit varnish, or oil varnish. The next steps are pre-staining and staining. You will learn how to apply the base coat and the color varnish and then sand and polish the varnish. Different methods for analyzing and influencing the frequency of the boards will be presented: The tap-tone method, the Fuhr method using glass tubes, the Hutchinss free-plate tuning method with frequency generator, etc. For practicing varnishing you will need a white violin, which you can either bring along or purchase at approx. € 150.00 at the workshop.
