Bronze Casting

Bronze Casting

Klassiker
Sand casting is one of the oldest methods for shaping metal. In this course, you will create a model made from wood or some other material, which is then pressed into special molding sand in a casting flask. After applying the sprues, you will pour the molten bronze into the form with a casting ladle. Once the metal has cooled, the rough casting can be taken out and finished.
Using our own models made from wood we will employ the traditional sand casting technique for making approximately three casts weighing maximally 400 g. We will alloy the required material (to be purchased from the instructor) ourselves in the course. Typical objects may include mountings, fittings for knife making, jewelry, replicas, or belt buckles.
We will learn about:
  • the theory of sand casting
  • producing models
  • treating surfaces and replication
  • alloying and melting of the bronze
  • finishing the cast blank
  • there will also be information on tools and on constructing your own smelting furnace
